Zephyr Art
Art for Children and Adventurous Adults
Here are a few frequently asked questions about our products.
1. What size are your Moon Fairies?
Our Moon Fairies are about 10” tall without hair and about 3” across. Because they are designed to have a ‘sketch like’ feel, they are pretty thin and we can easily display them in our children’s rooms by hanging them on the wall.
2. What are your rag sculptures made of?
Our rag sculptures (any pattern free, usually one of a kind, spontaneously created rag doll) and our Moon Fairies, Mustache Monkeys, 3in1’s, Woolie Babies, and other patterned creations, are made from both new and reclaimed fabrics. The Moon Fairies, due to need of consistency in design, have new material for their legs, arms and heads but utilize recycled materials for their front body panel. This allows us to have our little guys each be one of a kind, even if they are purchased without ZA embellishment, and even though they are produced in bulk numbers. The rag sculptures are created one at a time and use predominantly reclaimed, recycled materials. We like to stick with cotton and wool for the bulk of the creation but use all kinds of materials in the embellishments. We have begun to favor polar fleece as well. Although synthetic, it works well with experimental designs :). (All of our recaptured fabrics are washed, dried, and gone over for defects.)
3. How do you determine your pricing? ( We really don’t mind you asking. :) )
Lots of people look at handmade items and reel at how expensive they are. Products are cheaper to produce if time is spent creating a pattern, choosing materials and working out production kinks prior to making a ‘batch’. The bigger the batch made with the afore mentioned research, the cheaper each subsequent item can be. We have kept this in mind when designing our Moon Fairies. The pricing on our Moon Fairies is a combination of material and labor cost with an added percentage per piece to pay for travel, shows and the advertising needed to sell them. Because we are not producing the quantity that a Chinese factory can put out, we have to pay full price for materials and this puts us at a disadvantage. Be assured we are searching for bargains on quality materials, using recycled where it is possible, and always trying to think of creative ways to market so we can pass our savings on to you. Thank you so much for giving us a chance to explain why our product costs more than comparable department store items and we hope you are happy with your collectible, one of a kind piece designed with love for people just like you... not the average Joe. We think that the quality and character that each of our products has makes it worth the few extra dollars! Thanks again for supporting hand made, American made products and the artists that are committed to producing them!
4. How can I purchase your work?
We have an Etsy shop and have links located to our shop on both our website (www.zephyrart.org) or our blog (www.professionalbohemians.blogspot.com). We also have items we sell exclusively on our website on our ‘shop’ page as well as licensed merchandise from Cafe Press (also on our ‘shop’ page). We will also keep an updated list of shows we will sell at on our website under the ‘Shows’ tab. We would love to meet you! :) We also have several very friendly shops that carry our items, Olga’s, in Coudersport, PA and The Antiques, Arts and Collectibles Mall in Shelbyville, TN are two of our favorites!
5. Do you do custom orders?
Sometimes we do... custom orders take away from time spent on created items we are already set up to market, so they are a more expensive option. Also, we are more about designing and creating our designs than we are about sewing from already existing patterns so, if you have a design and pattern you just want sewn together, we are probably not your gals. If there is a specific one of our creations you would like a certain way, say a Moon Fairy that you would like to see with orange hair and purple pants, we can probably take care of you. :) Please feel free to contact us with any questions. It never hurts to ask. If we can’t do what you would like we will be gentle in expressing our ‘no’. :)
6. Do you have your own store or sell in any ‘walk into’ stores?
We do not sell from our studios but we do sell our items at Olga’s Living with Art, in Coudersport, PA. Our friend Olga also has many hand crafted, artist designed items that she has created herself. We hope if you are in the area you will stop by and check out her shop!
7. Why are all your things so weird?
We don’t know.
