Zephyr Art
Art for Children and Adventurous Adults
The Obligatory Artist Statement
Zephyr Art is a collaboration of sisters-in-law Julie Barrett Cataldo and Eppie Cataldo Bailey. We have earned our money as artists, musicians and writers, drawing from our experiences as wives, mothers, sisters, daughters and friends. We believe that everybody is creative and just needs to find their outlet and that everybody deserves to be happy and free. We believe that art, in any shape or form, is an excellent vehicle and language to entertain, connect, and communicate with others. We think ‘everything’ is ‘potentially funny’ which has successfully persuaded us not to strive toward fine art or craft, though we deeply appreciate both. We, personally, just can’t be that serious.
Hmmmmmmmm...Weellllllll...
We have been writing, creating, fabricating, workshopping, performing, teaching, collaborating, designing, sewing, painting, sketching, sculpting, mosaic, crafting and learning as Zephyr Art for ten years now. We, Eppie and Julie, have faithfully been plugging along, creating everything and anything we could think of, but, there comes a point when one (or in this case two) matures and begins to consider the words of the wise. Those words have been telling us that we need to focus, plan, and work toward a specific direction. When we were younger we thought that meant, “stifle and suffocate yourself for money” but now we are beginning to realize it means, “move forward instead of running around spurting art all over your family, friends and community”... although we think we can still do that too. :) We have decided to begin pursuing shows and selling more consistently. We’ve also decided that we are going to keep several of our more popular items stocked and ready to sell. We are excited about our Moon Fairy line and are happy with the response we are receiving! We will offer them consistently and consistently create and introduce smaller batches of new and unusual designs.
Our Quick, Off the Top of Our Heads, Resume
Zephyr Art has done several community art pieces, most notably “Vision, Action, Prayer: A Women’s History Month Sculpture” and “The Missing Piece: A Conversation about our Places in Society”. (Now might be a fine time to tell you that we are located in two separate locations, rural Middle Tennessee and even more rural North Central Pennsylvania. This might sound crazy but it works for us and, because we head back and forth between the two places often, it gets us out of the house.)
Zephyr Art has been the artists in residence for ‘The Dam Show’ in Austin, Pennsylvania for all of its eight years. We have designed all of their t-shirts and much of their promotional materials.
Zephyr Art has taught lessons and workshops in creative philosophy and we have donated many hours to teaching to homeschool art groups.
We have participated in both juried and non juried shows and plan to continue showing.
We have both, individually, worked for other artists, Sherri Warner Hunter, accomplished mosaic artist and Russell Faxon, professional bronze sculptor as well as collaborated with artists such as, Olga Snyder, Sara Batson, Jennifer Tyler, Pippa Browne, Big Smo, Steve Quelet, Josh Wolfe, Loreal Brown and many more.
Zephyr Art has created many paintings, sculptures, toy designs, garments, furniture pieces/painted furniture, jewelry, mosaics,
knitted/crocheted items, and other assorted works of art.
We have, as Freakish Owl Boy, recorded the cd ‘Soul of A Crow’ with Big Smo at Yayoda Records. (Monkey Stump Studio recorded two of our songs for us as well. Thanks Harry!) We have recorded for and appeared in an, as yet unreleased, indie movie, Hereafter, directed by Jeshua DeHorta.
What we LOVE
We spend our days with our children, of which we each have four, two girls and two boys apiece. (We are currently cyber schooling. An option that some of you artist/musician types might be interested in, as it is a structured yet flexible educational avenue. :)) We LOVE our children. They are talented, funny, creative and beautiful and we feel they are assets to the planet, in case you wanted to e-mail us about overpopulation. (Go Beckhams! We gotch your back!)
We LOVE music! Eppie is in a band called Jakob’s Hollow and we both perform as our hobby band, Freakish Owl Boy, which is named after a Zephyr Art piece and includes Logan (and sometimes Jake) Bailey and Eppie’s brother Ezra (and sometimes Adam, another of Eppie’s nine brothers, to whom Julie is married).
We LOVE to create. There are many things that we do that we don’t feel we could adequately market. Julie designs and sews lots of our clothing and makes a lot of our jewelry. It is important to us that we look unique and we are always interested in creating new looks and stylistic expressions. Eppie and Joe (her husband) like to design and fabricate sculptures and furniture out of wood and found objects. We both sketch and paint and explore different art mediums. Thus we have items that seem incongruous with our main line and with our toys... We just can’t help but share them with you.
We are both married and LOVE our husbands. We LOVE our friends. We LOVE art. We LOVE color. We LOVE movement. Ok, we LOVE life and LOVE when we see happy, unique people living it!!! Thanks for your time and we hope to someday meet you!!! We are sure we will LOVE you!
